The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Complete Faith' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a key Champions League match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.
During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 last-16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to confirm a last eight place.
At 18 years old, Pitarch became the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica
This talent is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.
He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
Pitarch worked his way up to the B team and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and drive he brought to the side.
'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'
During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes in the warm-up matches.
Yet, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I began playing football, each day you go to train and each day you play a match," said the player following his debut.
"I've just achieved my ambition with the best team in the world and in the best competition."
Handed a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.
The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his youth and inexperience.
"He's a very quick player, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He's extremely energetic, with great endurance, work-rate and movement."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.
"His greatest quality is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I realize people are astonished to watch him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to perform his normal game.
"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.
He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the option to represent both nations at senior international level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a official senior international match.
He has played for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.
Despite this, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are watching his progress with interest.
Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a decision soon."
His situation echoes that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal opted for Spain, Diaz decided to represent Morocco.
Focus on the Future
