The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Alleges Unilever Prevented Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Product
One of the co-founders behind the famous ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has claimed how parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction of a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, that established the company with his partner, disclosed how he will personally create the controversial product within a personal collection showcasing causes the company was barred from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Dispute Between Creators and Corporate Owner
This latest development intensifies the ongoing tension between the internationally recognized ice cream maker and Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods corporation which acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.
The co-founders maintain how Unilever along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Flavor as a Symbol for Solidarity
Mr. Cohen revealed via an Instagram video that he's developing an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, asking for consumer ideas for the product's name plus potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen commented from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”
The watermelon has become a symbol for solidarity with Palestinians due to its colors, which closely resemble those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Historical Social Engagement and Recent Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in territories occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever transferring the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within disputed territories.
The new dessert series is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand that was first established several years back to support ex- political contender Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes and Upcoming Plans
The founder indicated how he will create other frozen dessert varieties that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly due to Unilever.
The announcement comes after partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at the company in September, after many years with the organization, mentioning concerns regarding how the company's autonomy was undermined after corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked how "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to keep working inside the company to fight for its independence ensuring that the company can achieve the social mission, the principles which it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he told journalists.
