New York Launches Online Platform for Citizens to Share ICE Footage Following Arrests of 4 American Citizens
New York state attorney general has rolled out a new reporting form asking locals to submit visual evidence of ICE operations throughout the state. This step comes just a shortly after a high-profile ICE raid disrupted NYC's Chinatown, prompting mass demonstrations.
American Citizens Detained In ICE Operation
A congressional representative announced during a news conference that four American citizens were detained and held for "nearly 24 hours" following Tuesday's raid. Demonstrations occurred in New York on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"All New York residents is entitled to exist without intimidation," state officials stated in a release.
"Anyone who observed and captured immigration enforcement recently, I encourage you to submit that footage with my office. We are committed to examining these reports and investigating any violations of law."
Form Details
The platform offers spaces to upload photos and videos of the raid, along with a field to specify geographic details. When submitting, individuals must tick a checkbox that confirms that "the office might employ any evidence provided in a official report, including in a lawsuit or government document."
Details of the ICE Action
The enforcement action, which onlookers say featured dozens of federal agents, occurred in a famous district of the city where counterfeit handbags, accessories, jewelry and merchandise are sold daily en masse – typically to visitors.
Recordings of the operation depict multiple covered and weaponized personnel restraining and arresting a person, and forcing aside onlookers. Throngs of New Yorkers followed the officers along the roads. An armored truck was noticed moving along the Manhattan avenues.
Political Response
In a news conference held with the immigrant advocacy group, the congressman, a Democrat, said that four nationals were taken by federal agents for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where US citizens should be detained for unjustly." He clarified the persons were freed on Wednesday with no accusations made.
"The goal is evident here. It is not about removing offenders," he said. "This is a militarized effort to incite tension. It is simply a pretext to provoke conflict for federal officials to bring in the military to prevent violence that they initiated."
Broad Criticism
Anger over the ICE raid escalated – all three political contenders denounced the incident, as did Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Once again, the current administration opts for heavy-handed tactics that instill panic, not safety. It must stop," a contender stated.
The city's immigrant rights groups spoke out also.
"Federal officers descended on the neighborhood with military-style vehicles, hooded officers and riot gear to go after local sellers trying to make a living. This raid had nothing to do with public safety and was entirely about intimidating residents and areas," remarked the president of a advocacy group.
Agency Rules
Official guidelines forbids the detention of US citizens and the organization has said it will not arrest or detain US citizens. However, external research has found that more than 170 American nationals have been detained unlawfully by ICE since the start of the current administration.
Current Situation
Enforcement actions have been rising in frequency in NY and around the country lately.
A recent action in the city center was the first known raid on an housing center of the current administration. Rallies opposing federal operations are commonplace along with allegations of force and inhumane treatment.
Most recently, a submission submitted by legal entities stated healthcare failures of women with child in ICE facilities.
