Information Available Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack
At least 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.
The victims are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the individuals who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with five in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
