A Pig's Tale: Hog Named 6-7 Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.
It might not have been at the same level as pardoning festive fowl, but the county's top official conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of pardons issued since the commencement of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future without fear.”
The event, either celebrating or rejecting the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “6-7” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The trend became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently made “six-seven” its 2025 word of the year.
A New Life
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to kick off the festive period,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: vibrant, varied, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Each year, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
